Child Development

Curriculum Intent

At Poole High School, our Child Development curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of children's growth, development and wellbeing from birth through to early childhood. We aim to inspire students to develop a deeper appreciation of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social factors that influence a child's development, while gaining practical knowledge that can be applied in real-life contexts.

Through the study of child development, students explore key topics such as parental responsibilities, health and wellbeing, nutrition, play, learning, and the importance of creating safe and nurturing environments. The course encourages students to develop critical thinking, research and problem-solving skills while considering the diverse needs of children and families in modern society.

Key Stage 4

Our Child Development qualification focuses on the development of a child from conception to the age of 5. It develops knowledge and understanding in all aspects of child development. It is suitable for students who are considering a career working with children and for students who wish to learn about how to care for children.

Two coursework units will be completed which provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their knowledge to realistic childcare scenarios while developing research, planning and evaluation skills that are highly transferable to further study and future careers.

Examination - 50% of total marks

The exam focuses on the key stages of child development from conception to early childhood, including pre-conception health and reproduction, antenatal care and preparation for birth, postnatal checks and care, and the conditions that support healthy development. Students also investigate childhood illnesses and how to create and maintain a safe environment for young children. Through these topics, students develop a thorough understanding of the factors that influence a child’s health, wellbeing and development, alongside the knowledge needed to support children and families effectively.
